RIPON, Wis. - Ripon freshman guard Scott Gillespie just finished his first year of collegiate basketball, but at times, he looked nothing like a first year player, finishing the season with team-highs of 21.2 points and 5.1 assists per game. Tuesday, Gillespie was the lone Red Hawk selected to the MWC's All-Conference team, which was released Tuesday by the conference office.
Gillespie earned a spot on the Second Team, after a season that saw him finish fourth in scoring and second in assists in the Midwest Conference. The Ripon, Wis. native also averaged 4.2 rebounds per game, which was third on the Red Hawks. In addition to that, Gillespie shot 81 percent from the free throw line and 34 percent from 3-point range. He started all 23 games for the Red Hawks, while playing an average of 32.2 minutes per game, which also led the team.
The Midwest Conference First Team was led by MWC Player of the Year Ryan Kroeger from Lawrence University. He was joined by fellow Viking Andy Hurley, Grinnell's John Grotberg, Beloit's Andy Horton, Carroll's Wes Ladwig, and Monmouth's Joe Terwelp. The Midwest Conference Coach of the Year was Knox's Tim Heimann, who led the Prairie Fire to a 7-9 conference mark, just one year after finishing tied for last place.
Joining Gillespie on the MWC Second Team was Grinnell guards David Arsenault and Bobby Long, St. Norbert forward Eric Bieniasz, and Lake Forest forward Laird Walker. The MWC Honorable Mentions consisted of Knox's Adam Estergard and Grant Kluge, Carroll's John Hoch and Ryan Mueller, Illinois College's Brad Johnson,
St. Norbert's Tom Katzfey, and Lake Forest's Hoyt Reese.
