Note 1: All standings ties are rounded up (i.e. three teams tied with two losses for second are all listed as second, with the next team in line listed as a fifth-place finish). During the years of divisional play, winning percentage determined final place. In cases where a divisional tie resulted in a multiple champion, the loser of the championship game was rounded down.

Note 2: The Midwest Conference ignored ties in conference standings from 1922 to 1936. From 1937 to the present, ties are considered a half-win and half-loss. All ties are counted as such in these standings.

Note 3: The first round-robin schedule was in 1954. Winning percentage figures conference places prior to that date as recognized at that particular time.

School Notes: Beloit did not compete in 1951, when serving a one-year suspension, and did not return until 1959. A polio epidemic in Appleton, Wis., in 1955 resulted in Lawrence canceling its first three games, so games with Lawrence did not count in MWC standings that year. Beloit had freshmen on its 1970 and 1971 teams due to lack of upperclass personnel, so games with that school were counted as non-conference contests. Monmouth served a two-year MWC suspension in 1974 and 1975. St. Norbert served a one-year MWC suspension for an illegal pre-season intercollegiate scrimmage in 1998.

Schedule Notes: Divisions were East and West in 1976 and 1977, followed by Red and Blue Divisions in 1978 and 1979. The Red Division was a grouping of “strong” football programs (Ripon, Cornell, Lawrence, Monmouth, Coe and Knox), while the Blue Division was a grouping of “weak” football programs (Lake Forest, Beloit, Carleton, Chicago and Grinnell). (Ed. Note: The use of “strong” and “weak” as adjectives are marked as such in official MWC records.) In 1980 and 1981, round-robin play was used. Beginning in 1982, North and South Divisions were used until the departure of Coe and Cornell from the MWC in 1997. Starting in 1998, full round-robin scheduling resumed. In 2001, an eight-game conference schedule was played due to a cancellation of all games on Sept. 15, due to terrorist attacks on Sept. 11.
