RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks gained a season-high 516 yards Saturday, in what was an offensive exhibition, helping them to defeat Illinois College 48-17. Ripon fell behind early in the game, but outscored the Blueboys 41-7 in the final 33 minutes. IC gained 284 total yards, including just 70 on the ground.
The Blueboys got on the board first, cashing in the opening drive of the game with a 22-yard field goal. After a couple defensive stops by both teams, Ripon's John McGuire found the end zone on a seven yard touchdown reception from Tygh Walters, giving the Red Hawks a 7-3 lead after one quarter of play.
Illinois College took the lead back with just under seven minutes to play on an eight yard touchdown pass. That lead didn't last long, as Walters passed for another touchdown with under four minutes to play in the first half. Walter's second TD toss went 59 yards to Andrew Fink. Ripon wasn't done yet, as Walters threw his third TD of the first half with 35 seconds left, this time a 13 yarder to Ted Bartels, giving Ripon a 21-10 lead at the break.
Ripon started the second half much like they ended the first, in the end zone. Walters put six more points on the board, this time on the ground, as he ran it in from two yards out. Illinois College fumbled the ensuing kickoff, which was recovered by the Red Hawks, setting up another Walters to Bartels touchdown pass on the very next play, all but icing the game. Illinois College scored once more in the third quarter, but that would be the last time they would see paydirt. Walters ran for another touchdown in the fourth quarter, while Russell Maly capped the scoring with his first TD run of the season, from six yards out.
Walters had an outstanding game both passing and rushing. The junior quarterback finished the game with 120 yards rushing, including his two scores, while completing 11 of his 17 passes for 173 yards and four touchdowns. Ripon's leading rusher Scott Perkins added 107 yards on the ground for the Red Hawks, who rushed for a combined 343 yards. Bartels, who scored two TDs, has now caught a touchdown in seven consecutive games, dating back to last season.
The Red Hawks will hope to continue this momentum next Saturday when they'll host Carroll College for Ripon's 2007 homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Ingalls Field and can be seen live via webcast at www.midwestconference.tv.
