BELOIT, Wis. - The best cure to erase the memory of a loss is to have a blowout win in the next game. That is just what Ripon College did Saturday afternoon, running rampant over Beloit College for a 56-9 victory. The Red Hawks ran it down the throats of the Buccaneers all day long, to the tune of 528 rushing yards, which ranks second in school history for a single game.
Scott Perkins got Ripon (4-2, 4-1) on the board first with a 47 yard touchdown run on the Red Hawk's second drive of the game. They added a second touchdown later in the first quarter when Jon Larsen found the end zone from five yards out. Perkins added his second score of the game on a nine yard run to give Ripon a commanding 21 point lead. Beloit (0-6, 0-5) finally scored with nine and a half minutes left in the first half, getting a 32-yard field goal from Andrew Reich. Ripon's John McGuire answered right back though, running for a 12 yard score. It looked as if the Red Hawks were done scoring for the first half, until Joshua Kraemer intercepted a Buccaneer pass with under two minutes to play, returning it 53 yards for a score and giving Ripon a 35-3 halftime lead.
The second half turned out to be more of the same, as the Red Hawks scored on the opening drive of the third quarter when quarterback Tygh Walters took the ball himself for a two-yard plunge. Perkins added his third touchdown of the contest later in the third, scoring from a couple yards out. The fourth quarter started just as the first, second, and third began, with a Ripon touchdown. Larsen did the honors this time, finding the end zone for the second time on the day to cap the Ripon scoring. Beloit added their lone touchdown with under one minute to play in the game, when the game had already been decided.
In addition to Ripon's massive rushing yardage total, the Red Hawks also gained 30 first downs, while averaging 7.2 yards per carry. Ripon's defense also did their job, allowing just 11 Beloit first downs. The Red Hawks gained a total of 576 yards compared to 240 for the Buccaneers. Ripon was led by Perkins, who ran the ball 16 times for 168 yards and three scores. Larsen and McGuire also had quality days, going for 82 and 61 rushing yards, respectively. McGuire also caught two passes for 30 yards.
The Red Hawks will hope to keep their momentum going next weekend in a huge game against Monmouth College. Both teams are in a three-way tie with Carroll College for second place in the Midwest Conference. Next Saturday's showdown at Ingalls Field will begin at 1:00 p.m. and can be seen live via webcast at www.midwestconference.tv.
