RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's men had five runners earn All-State honors at Saturday's Wisconsin Private College Championships, while the Red Hawk women finished with two All-State performances, en route to a first and third place finish, respectively.
The men's team won the 12-team race with a team score of 37, which was 26 points better than the second place St. Norbert Green Knights. That marks the third consecutive year the Red Hawks have won this event. Jason Smith and Ben Worcester each qualified for First Team All-State with a third and fourth finish, respectively. Smith ran a time of 26:11, while Worcester was just one second behind. A.J. Thew, Lucas Felten and Michael Dussault also finished as a group, each earning Second Team All-State honors. Thew finished the race ninth out of 104 competitors with a time of 26:47, while Felten and Dussault finished 10th and 11th, respectively. Cory Zimmerman and Trenton Cherco also earned some points for the Red Hawks, finishing in 22nd and 44th place.
The Ripon women's team saw two runners earn First Team All-State, as Michelle Matter and Jessica Davey were third and fourth, respectively, out of 84 runners in the 15-team field. Matter ran a 6K time of 23:57, while Davey finished with a time of 24:13. Nikki Weichbrod came in 26th place with a time of 26:06, while Laura Reuling was 29th with a time of 26:15. Katie Williams, Rebecca Ostrowski and Lauren Colette were the other Ripon runners to earn team points, finishing 35th, 38th and 55th, respectively. The Red Hawks totaled 97 points in all, which was 12 behind Beloit and 31 behind Viterbo, who won the event.
Ripon is off next week, before gearing up for the Midwest Conference Championships a week later. That event will be held on October 31 at Beloit College.
