De PERE, Wis. - The Ripon cross country team couldn't have asked for a better start to the 2007 season. In their first race of the year, the men's team won the St. Norbert Invitational, while the women came in fifth place. The two teams combined to place four players in the top ten finishers.
The men scored 43 points to tie for first with St. Norbert out of 11 teams. Jim Hein led Ripon, finishing second overall with a 4 mile time of 21:02. Harrison Smith and Bryan Schneider weren't far off the pace, finishing in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Jason Smith, Michael Dussault, and Ben Worcester also finished in the top 20 at numbers 12, 16 and 17, respectively.
The women's team also had a nice showing in their season debut. They finished with 113 points, which was just one point behind fourth place Lawrence University. Jessica Davey led the way with a ninth place finish thanks to her time of 21:18. Erin Bavery, Erin Beggs, and Rebecca Duley also cracked the top 25 for the Red Hawks.
Ripon will be off next weekend, before traveling to Waukesha, Wis. on September 15 to compete in the Carroll College Invitational.
