Late Rally Lifts Red Hawks Over Arcadia (PA)

March 10, 2008

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. – Ripon College ended Monday's game against Arcadia (PA) much like they began it, with a flurry of runs. The Red Hawks only scored in two innings all day, but that was enough for an 8-6 victory, in which eight different players crossed the plate.

The first two innings were uneventful for both teams, with just one hit between the two squads. Things got interesting in the bottom of the third, when the Red Hawks put three runs on the board. The inning was started by a Paul Ebben single to left field. Ripon would proceed to load the bases with two outs, when Will Gillis cleared the bases with one swing of the bat, hitting a triple to left, and giving the Red Hawks a 3-0 lead.

Arcadia finally got their bats going in the sixth inning, after getting just one hit in the first five frames. Their sixth-inning rally was started by an RBI single, and was continued, thanks to some help from the Red Hawks. Arcadia was able to tie the game on a wild pitch and a passed ball, which occurred on back-to-back plays. They took the lead two batters later on a single that scored two runners, giving Arcadia a 5-3 advantage. They looked to be in the driver's seat, as they added another run on an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning.

Ripon would show that they weren't done yet, putting up five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take an 8-6 lead. After the first batter recorded an out, seven consecutive Red Hawks reached base. That included two hit batsmen, each coming with the bases loaded. The big blow came via Nick Beaman, who broke the 6-6 tie with a single to left field, which drove home two runners, giving the Red Hawks the lead for good.

Ebben was the only Red Hawk with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 on the day. Gillis and Beaman led the way with three and two RBI, respectively. Gillis' triple was the only extra-base hit for the Red Hawk's all day, which along with a Gillis home run on Sunday, are Ripon's only extra-base hits of the season. Bryant Bullock got the win for the Red Hawks, pitching 2.2 innings of two hit ball. Wes Kraemer recorded the save, his second of the year.

Ripon will be in action again on Tuesday, as they'll face Mt. Union (OH) in their only game of the day. That match-up will begin at 10:00 a.m. EDT at Eckerd College.
