SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Ripon's hitting has been so unstoppable as of late, they haven't needed much help from their pitching. That's just what they got on Friday afternoon, as the Red Hawks shut out Lakeland College in both games of their doubleheader, giving them the sweep over the Muskies, and marking their 10th consecutive victory. Ripon won the first game 5-0, while also taking game two, 19-0, which is the fifth time in the last eight games that they've scored 19 runs.
It took their offense a little time to get going, but Ripon (18-3) finally broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Brett Wegner delivered a two-out single, scoring Nick Whitty from second base. The score stayed the same until the sixth, when the Red Hawks put another run on the board due to alert base running by Nate Paul, who scored on a Lakeland error.
Ripon would add plenty of insurance in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs to take a 5-0 lead. Alex Duros drove in the first run of that inning, before Paul drove in the final two runs, doubling down the left field line.
Whitty led the Red Hawks with three hits on the day, while Wegner and Paul each recorded two hits apiece. Bryant Bullock (3-0) picked up the win, pitching a complete game four-hitter, while walking two and striking out four.
The second game of the day featured a bit more offense, with Ripon pounding out 20 hits for the fourth time this season. The game started with a pair of singles from Matt Dwyer and Nick Beaman. They would later score on an Alex Duros double down the left field line.
The Red Hawks broke the game wide open in the third inning, scoring eight runs to take a 10-0 lead. The first four batters of the inning reached base, including Brandan Birschbach, who drove in two runs with a single to left. The big blow of the inning came four batters later with the bases loaded, when Beaman cranked the ball over the fence for a grand slam, his seventh home run and 29th RBI of the season.
Ripon added three runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth, giving them the 19-0 victory. Bob Bruce (1-0) pitched a complete game two-hitter for the win, striking out six batters. Wegner recorded a game-high four hits to lead the way, while Duros and Kurt Roeder each had two. Birschbach, Beaman, and Scott Gillespie each finished the second game with two hits apiece.
