April 16, 2008

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

WAUKESHA, Wis. – After scoring 31 runs in the first two games of their series against Carroll College, a pair of 10-run victories, Ripon managed to outdo themselves on Wednesday as the series shifted to Waukesha, where Ripon's bats were heated up before the team even got off the bus. Ripon won the first game 25-11 and nearly matched that score in the second game, a 20-1 Ripon victory. In addition to their 45 runs in the two games, the Red Hawks also managed 42 hits. Their game one run total ranks third in school history for most runs in a single game, while game two's total is tied for sixth. Their 24 hits in the first game also rank third in school history for hits in a game.

Carroll (6-14, 2-6 MWC) looked like they may pull an upset early, scoring three runs in the first inning and holding that lead until the third, when Ripon (16-3, 8-0 MWC) scored four runs to take a one-run advantage. That didn't last long, as Carroll put up two more runs in the bottom of that inning and another in the fourth, to take a 6-4 lead.

The Red Hawks finally took command in the fifth, scoring three runs, including one on Alex Duros' first home run of the season, which tied the score at six. Ripon added nine runs in the top of the sixth to break the game wide open. Matt Dwyer's third home run of the season led off the seventh, giving the Red Hawks a 17-6 lead, but Carroll managed to score three times in the bottom of the inning to avoid the 10-run mercy rule. That only delayed the inevitable however, as Ripon scored eight more runs in the final two innings.

Nick Beaman continued his unbelievable hitting display for the Red Hawks, going 5-for-6 with six RBI and five runs scored. Those hits included a triple, as well as his sixth home run of the season. Dwyer also had a great day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored. Ripon hit four home runs in the game, including a grand slam by freshman Kurt Roeder, which also marks the first home run of his collegiate career.

The second game of the doubleheader wasn't nearly as close as the first, with the Red Hawk jumping on Carroll pitching early and often. Ripon scored three times in the first, before adding seven more in the third, which was capped by a two-run double from Duros. They would add two more runs in the fourth, before Carroll would get their first and only run of the game.

Ripon would get that run back the following inning when Aaron Kastner crushed one over the fence for a three-run homer, his first of the season. The Red Hawks added their final five runs of the day in the sixth, which was led off by a Beaman triple.

Duros led the way in the second game, with his second three-hit game of the day, to go along with three RBI. Brett Wegner added four RBI in game two, going 2-for-3 at the plate, which included a double. Dwyer, Beaman, Brandan Birschbach, Nate Paul, and Paul Ebben also had a multi-hit game, recording two base knocks each. Adam Linsmeyer (3-0) picked up the win in a dominating performance in which he struck out a school record 14 batters. He went the full seven innings, scattering nine hits, while walking just two hitters.

The Red Hawks will take a break from Midwest Conference play this weekend, as they'll travel to Lakeland College for a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The first game will begin at 1:00 p.m. in Sheboygan.
