APPLETON, Wis. - The Red Hawks extended their Midwest Conference win streak to 26 games Saturday afternoon, but could not extend it any further, as they split with Lawrence University. The Red Hawks won the first game 4-1, but dropped the second in dramatic fashion, losing 6-5.
Lawrence (8-17, 3-7) put up the first run of the game, as Frank Forseth scored on a Red Hawk error. The game was quickly tied up the following inning. John Dunlavy walked to lead off the inning and he would eventually score on a passed ball. Bo Johnson gave the Red Hawks (15-10, 9-1) their first lead of the game in the fourth, singling in Mac Shumann. They added two more runs the following inning and counted on their pitching and defense to hold for the victory, which it did.
Jordan Baitinger picked up the win for Ripon, improving his record to 5-1. Baitinger pitched eight innings of three-hit ball, while striking out five. Bryant Bednarek picked up his first save of the season for the Red Hawks. They were led at the plate by Kyle McFarland, who was the only Red Hawk with multiple hits, finishing with two.
The Vikings struck first in game two, thanks in part to two Ripon errors in the second inning. Forseth came up big again in the inning, singling home two runs. Ripon would get one run in the third on a Dunlavy single, but Lawrence answered right back with two more runs of their own. Hawk Haiduke was responsible for both runs, as he drove them in with a single up the middle.
Ripon took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take a 5-4 advantage. The inning was highlighted by a Dunlavy double down the left field line, which scored the first two runs of the inning. Lawrence tied things up in the sixth, as Haiduke scored on a Billy Bodle single.
The two teams held each other scoreless the next couple innings, until the bottom of the ninth. The inning was started by a lead-off single by Evan Neuens. After a sacrifice and a ground out to second, Neuns stood just 90 feet away from a Lawrence win. With two-out, Tim Salm delivered on that win with a single to right, scoring Neuens with the winning run, snapping Ripon's conference win streak.
The Red Hawks will try to begin a new streak on Sunday, as they'll play another doubleheader against Lawrence. The first game will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Francis Field in Ripon.
