To develop artists, teachers and, patrons of the theatre...

PREAMBLE

The study of the theatre is the study of all of life and so as an academic major, theatre is a microcosm of the liberal arts: an ideal of integrated understanding. The Ripon College theatre faculty propel majors to gain general knowledge of the arts, crafts and history of the theatre and to develop a variety of theatre skills. An individual major’s personal achievements will give him or her the potential to develop into an artist of the theatre within the context of the liberal arts. The department’s teaching goals are compatible with college-wide effort to establish a desire for life-long learning and development in the student.

Areas of Concentration

Concentration in one or two theatre arts is encouraged but the outlook is always to perceive those areas within the context of the total art form.

Skills Development

For the individuals who wish to pursue further study in the crafts and arts of the theatre in internships or graduate schools, we offer upper level skills classes and independent studies for enhanced development.

Creative Endeavors

Individual creativity is important to achievement in the theatre and in life, therefore we seek to introduce students to tools and outlooks that will assist them in finding and developing their personal visions and voices.

Physical and Pschological Safety

We are dedicated to providing a safe and open environment, both physically and psychologically, in which a student is free to experiment and risk growth.

Collaboration

The theatre by its nature is a collaborative art, therefore the faculty seek to model behaviors of cooperation and ensemble productions.

Preparation for the Future

An understanding of the traditions in Western theatre and dramatic literature and, an appreciation for world theatre are fundamental in providing a context where the developing artist can envision new possibilities, new theatres.

The Extended Classroom

The learning is extended beyond the classroom walls to include the Chicago Semester in the Arts, a semester abroad in the London/Florence Program, field trips to professional theatres, independent studies, guest artists and, visiting theatre companies.

A Tool for Positive Change

We believe that the theatre is an art form which records, signals and effects change in the culture, therefore we wish to foster an understanding in the community which accommodates the theatre's artistic, educational, social, moral, spiritual and political aspects. While entertainment value is a significant portion of the theatrical event and cannot be overlooked, we understand that the theatre can and should be utilized to encourage constructive change in the society.
