Special Announcement!

Please help me in congratulating the 2009 Ripon College Ethics Bowl Team: Alicia Bruns, Sarah Moehrke, Wally Hernandez, Katrina Schauland and Elizabeth McHone

These ELP scholars, along with Coach Deano Pape, travelled to Northeastern Illinois University this last weekend to compete in the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl (IEB) sponsored by the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) and the Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions (CSEP).

The Ripon College team tied three judges’ ballots and won one judge’s ballot during a close competition in which they discussed topics such as cheating on standardized tests, the use of hate speech versus first amendment rights and many more important ethical dilemmas.  The Ripon College team competed with other top colleges and universities and made an excellent showing by arguing their points well, working as a team and keeping up the enthusiasm and dedication throughout the day-long competition.  Although the team did not compete in the final round, they made it through several rounds with good arguments and great team spirit.

{ Ethics Bowl }

What is it?

The Ethics Bowl is an annual competition pitting various teams of Ripon students against each other in a debate-style format. They are given various cases to study prior to the event, and on competition day, they must present arguments to a panel of judges and each other.  The arguments are judged on the students' use of ethical discovering and decision making, presentation and the ability to draw out nuances in the cases.

The Ethics Bowl is the culmination of the Ethics Studies Project Team within the ELP where students debate and discuss topics such as medical outsourcing, biofuel, client confidentiality and many other ethical dilemmas.  During the previous Ethics Bowl Regional Competition the case studies provided powerful examples of ethical dilemmas faced in our society.  To see these cases please click here.

The team that wins the Ethics Bowl here in Ripon can move onto regional competition!  For more information on regional Ethics Bowl competition head to CSEP website.

When?

Ethics Bowl 2009 occurred on Saturday, November 21st at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago Illinois.  To check out the cases for this year's regional Ethics Bowl click here.

Ethics Bowl 2010 information will be available in August 2010.  Please keep checking back!
