Nancy Hogshead-Makar
Nancy Hogshead-Makar capped eight years as a world-class swimmer at the 1984 Olympics where she won more medals than any other swimmer — three gold and one silver. She received the Kiphuth Award, given to the best all-around swimmer nationally, and has been inducted into seven halls of fame, including the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame.
Today, Hogshead-Makar is a professor at the Florida Coastal School of Law, where she teaches Torts and Amateur Sports Law. She has been a high-profile advocate of gender equity in sports and is one of the nation’s foremost exponents of Title IX, particularly within the context of intercollegiate sports. In private practice at Holland & Knight LLP, she represented student-athletes and universities in Title IX matters. She is a former president of the Women’s Sports Foundation (1992-94) and serves as its legal adviser. She has testified in Congress numerous times about gender equity in athletics, written numerous scholarly and lay articles, and has been a frequent guest on the topic on national news programs, including CBS’ “60 Minutes,” ABC’s “Good Morning America,” CNN and ESPN. She serves as an expert witness in Title IX cases and has filed supportive affidavits such as her submission in support of the plaintiff in Mercer v. Duke University. In 2004, Hogshead-Makar wrote the amicus brief representing athletic organizations in Jackson v. Birmingham, which was decided by the Supreme Court in 2005.
Hogshead-Makar has received the Women’s Sports Foundation’s Yolanda Jackson Give Back Award, an honorary doctorate from Springfield College and membership in the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame and the Hall of Fame for the National Association for Sports and Physical Education. Additionally, she was awarded the Community Woman of the Year Award by Jacksonville University in 2003.
Hogshead-Makar earned her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and is an honors graduate of Duke University with majors in political science and women’s studies.
