Why Study Abroad?

Although excellent language study can be performed within the confines of a classroom, the best way to develop, expand, and enhance one’s language skills is to use them exclusively within the context of a foreign environment. With this in mind, students studying in Spanish are highly encouraged to study abroad. Ripon College has official programs in 3 Spanish-speaking countries: Costa Rica, Cuba, and Spain. Within Spain students may study at Madrid, Toledo, or Seville. Although the improvement of language skills constitutes the primary reason why many students study abroad, students also take classes in art, business, history, literature, politics, and sociology. Additionally, excursions to sites of cultural and historical significance constitute an integral part of these programs. For information on Ripon's study abroad opportunties, click here.

Prerequisites for a semester or year in Costa Rica, Cuba, or Spain
Students must have a grade point average of at least 2.00 in order to study abroad. Though there is no official restriction on when during the course of a student’s matriculation at Ripon College one may study abroad, preference for enrollment in these programs is usually given to upperclassman, and students typically go abroad during their junior year.

A minimum of two years of college Spanish or 3 or more years of high school Spanish is also required for these programs. Contact Michelle Fuerch for any questions you may have about studying in these countries.
