International Study

A variety of international study experiences are available to Ripon students. Language majors, in particular, are urged to take at least one semester of study abroad at a place of interest to them.

For those who study French, the College sponsors a program through the Academic Year Abroad Program in Paris, France. Students live with French families while taking courses at the University of Paris.

Students in Spanish have several programs from which to choose. Ripon offers an Academic Year Abroad in Madrid, Spain, in which students live with Spanish families and attend classes taught by professors from the University of Madrid-Complutense. Students in the program often travel extensively throughout Spain and Portugal.

Some students prefer to live in a smaller city. Ripon College accommodates them with a program stationed in the medieval city of Toledo, Spain, some 60 miles south of Madrid. Students typically live in a restored monastery and attend classes taught by native Spanish professors.

Students also may study beginning or intermediate Spanish in Buenos Aires, Argentina, along with courses in Latin American Studies in English.

Ripon also offers two programs in San Jose, Costa Rica, administered by the Associated Colleges of the Midwest. In the fall, the Latin American Culture and Society Program places students with Costa Rican families. Language studies are an integral part of the program with substantial time given to Central American culture. A two-week rural stay somewhere in the Costa Rican countryside is part of the fall semester’s activities.

Tropical Field Research is a spring-semester program for advanced independent work in the natural and social sciences and in the humanities. Research projects are designed and executed by student and adviser working closely together in all aspects of the research process, from proposal writing to field work to final writing and presentation. Students develop independence in the process, and many go on to professional careers related to their research experience in Costa Rica. A two-month rural stay is part of this program. Students are placed with Costa Rican families.

Foreign Language Experience

Students whose high school or other background permits them to enroll in a language course above 111 during their first year at Ripon will, after completing the course with a grade of B or above, receive credit for previous courses in the sequence. The maximum credit granted retroactively shall be 12 credits. The credits will not carry a grade and will not fulfill any distribution requirement.

Latin American Studies

The Latin American studies major is an interdisciplinary major that is designed to prepare students for careers in business or government agencies with interest in Latin America, as well as for continued study of the area on the graduate level. With Spanish as the core offering, Latin American studies majors also acquire a solid background in anthropology, economics and politics and government.
