Human Behavior in Today's Society

Sexual harassment, the search for world peace in times of global political change, control of pollution, the rise of crime, racism – items from today’s headlines suggest that issues concerning human behavior and its modification will be of paramount importance to future generations. As a discipline, psychology seeks to understand the conditions that influence human and animal behavior and strives to promote human cooperation and survival.

Researchers in psychology are involved in medical and scientific experimentation. Disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and AIDS dementia affect the mind as well as the brain, and psychologists are striving to understand their psychological impact. Psychologists interested in animal behavior currently are studying environmental changes on the mating patterns and social organization of species.

The psychology of the new century will not be merely the psychology of Freud, Pavlov and Skinner. While the mothers and fathers of psychology established the theories that we use to diagnose behavior, contemporary psychologists apply their knowledge to the solution of major world problems.
