Psychobiology Requirements

The psychobiology major is an interdisciplinary program of study in the behavioral
and biological sciences. It is designed for those students who are interested in such fields as animal behavior, behavior genetics, cognitive neuroscience, physiological psychology, psychopharmacology, neurobiology and developmental psychobiology. A basic core of required courses will expose the student to the fundamental knowledge and methodological skills peculiar to this broad area of study. Beyond these general requirements, the student may select a course of study which emphasizes either a behavioral or physiological concentration.

Requirements for a major in Psychobiology

The basic core of required courses includes Biology 121 (Concepts of Biology), Psychology 110 (General Psychology), Psychology 211-212 (Research Design and Statistics), Chemistry 111 (Organic Chemistry I), Chemistry 112 (Structure and Reactivity), two credits of Independent Study 541, 542 and either (a) Biology Senior Studies 501 and 502 or (b) Psychology Research Seminar 423.

Students selecting the behavioral emphasalso is are required to take, beyond the core, Biology 247 (General Ecology), Psychology 233 (Comparative Animal Behavior) or Biology 339 (Behavioral Ecology), and two of the following: Biology 215 (Invertebrate Zoology), Biology 216 (Vertebrate Zoology), Biology 219 (Genetics), Psychology 235 (Child Development), Psychology 242 (Adolescence), Psychology 326 (Theories of Motivation) and Psychology 339 (Cognitive Processes).

Students selecting the physiological emphasis are required to take, beyond the core, Psychology 324 (Physiological Psychology) and Biology 211 (Human Anatomy and Physiology I), plus two of the following: Biology 219 (Genetics), Biology 312 (Human Anatomy and Physiology II), Biology 327 (Cell Physiology), Biology 329 (Developmental Biology), Psychology 328 (Sensation and Perception) and Psychology 342 (Cognitive Neuroscience).

All psychobiology students are strongly urged to take course work in computer science;
mathematics through calculus, and Physics 151 and 152.

Courses

541, 542. Independent Study

One or two credits.
Original research in some area of psychobiological science of interest to the student. The research will be carried out under the supervision of two faculty members (one each from the psychology and biology departments). A final paper is required. Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing, consent of the instructors, 12 credits toward the major, and approval of one of the directors.
