Physics Seeks to Describe the Universe
For thousands of years, physicists have sought to describe what
the universe is and how it works. We continue to study the largest
and smallest structures, the highest and lowest energies, the
strongest and weakest forces in an attempt to form a coherent
and universal picture of matter, energy and their interaction.
The physics program at Ripon College acquaints students with
the workings of the physical universe through a balanced program
of experimentation, reading, writing and speaking.
We offer introductory courses which give, in two semesters, an
overview of the basic concepts in the field. Intermediate and
advanced courses go back to these concepts and develop them in
more sophisticated mathematical models. By the time students
have completed a physics major, they are well acquainted with
mechanics, statistical physics, electricity and magnetism, and
modern physics and are ready to apply their knowledge and analytical
skills to significant problems.
