Learning to Think Philosophically

The philosophy department at Ripon College is centrally concerned with the human activity of philosophical thinking. We strive to improve one's ability to recognize and describe philosophical questions and problems. For only by careful description of these issues can one effectively create and evaluate ideas for solutions. Thus even the so-called "great philosophers" are studied primarily for lessons about how to locate and shape questions and go about answering them. Their answers, while often fascinating in their own right, are studied more as models of the process of making sense of ourselves and our world, and as resource bins from which we might take material for our own philosophical needs.
