Journalism & Education: the Liberal Arts Advantage

Arthur Miller once noted, “A good newspaper is a nation talking to itself.” Journalism is about understanding the issues and people of yesterday, today and tomorrow. The journalist must interpret events, evaluate situations and inform both specialized and general audiences of news which can concern politics, social psychology, economic indicators, race and public communication.

The liberal arts IS a school of journalism! The liberal arts ask students to make connections across fields, require them to argue using language that must be adapted for a busy reader, engage research and evidence which is examined, critiqued and communicated to audiences large and small – these levels of critical thinking and understanding carry the Ripon College journalism student beyond the “5 Ws” to a more thorough understanding of controversial issues which extend beyond our campus, our state – even our national borders.

Ripon College has graduated hundreds of responsible and effective journalists in the last century. The Ripon College advantage lies not in the study of journalism for journalism’s sake, but in the comprehension, analysis and evaluation of life’s events and the application of writing, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills which are practiced every day in the Ripon College classroom.
