Off-Campus Study
Students can study history in overseas programs in Britain,
Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Costa Rica, China, Zimbabwe and
the Czech Republic. Those interested in advanced historical research
can pursue their interests with a semester at the Army War College
or at Newberry Library in Chicago.
On-Campus Study
The department regularly offers special courses that provide
students with a chance to study one topic in great depth, such
as “World War I,” “Slavery and Civil War,” “Women
in American History,” "King Arthur and Legendary History"
and "Film in American History." All courses emphasize hands-on
historical skills. The course “Greek and Roman Society” includes
an opportunity to analyze the college’s own collection
of ancient artifacts. "Local History" introduces
students to working with archival material, and there are further
opportunities for internships with local history museums and
archives. All history majors take a seminar their senior year.
This course brings together the skills learned in other courses
and results in writing a substantial research paper. Every student’s
paper is presented and discussed at an on-campus history conference
held in the spring.
