Medical school admission committees face the challenge every year
of assembling an entering class of students who will best fulfill the
mission of the school and serve the nation's diverse population. To
meet this challenge, the admission committees select candidates based
on a comprehensive review of each applicant's total academic and personal
qualifications. Among the qualifications they examine are an applicant's:
- Scholarship
- Accomplishments
- Intellectual curiosity
- Emotional maturity
- Character
- Interest in medicine
- Sensitivity to others
- Communication skills
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Sense of caring for others
- Commitment to service
Admission committees gather much of this information from the detailed
application each medical school applicant completes. These applications
include a personal statement from the candidate, his/her academic,
extracurricular and volunteer history, letters of recommendation, transcripts
and a report of standardized test scores. Admission committees also
may interview applicants to explore their qualifications further.
