The program is intended for students seeking to certify in elementary education and would ordinarily be taken during the first semester of the junior year. The course of study would include courses to substitute for and extend Ed. St. 337 (Elementary Teaching: Science **) and Ed. St. 323 (Elementary Teaching: Social Studies #), in-school experience, a "professional studies" course as a taste of British educational philosophy and foundations, and an opportunity to take courses applicable to a major and/or minor or other requirements at Ripon. Courses offered by the University of Wales Bangor but not in the School of Education could be taken if scheduling constraints allow.
The School of Education teaches courses in all of the curriculum subjects studied by children in Welsh primary schools: Art, Music, Physical Education, Science, Technology and Design, English, Welsh, Mathematics, History, Geography, and Religious Studies. We are recommending the following for all Ripon students who go there:
Core studies in science Year 1 and 2, Semester 1 (**)
Curriculum studies in Geography and History (#)
Curriculum studies in Technology and Design (**)
Depending on individual majors and minors, students might take subject studies modules in history, science, music, physical education, English, mathematics, etc. in the School of Education. It might be possible to make special arrangements to take a course in the larger University (outside the School of Education), but this has proved difficult in the past.. To satisfy general education or methods course/certification requirements, students could take curriculum studies courses in these areas as well. To learn more about core and curriculum studies--including learning outcomes--go to this link and scroll down to one of the BED/... (e.g. BED?MUS for someone seeking a B.Ed. degree with a concentration in music) and look at Year 1 and Year 2 offering in Professional and Curricular Studies and in Core Studies. Details about what is offered in the various subject areas (e.g. science or Welsh or English) are given in some detail. Ripon students visiting Bangor in the first semester have been allowed to "mix and match" modules to create a program to address best their needs for "covering" Wisconsin certification requirements.
Contact Mary Williams-Norton for information about specific courses. The School of Education has supplied us with full course descriptions for all subject study, core studies, curriculum studies, and professional studies modules currently offered.
