About the Business Administration Program
My personal philosophy is that business is not just an economic system, or a way to make money, but a way of life. Each person has an opportunity to experience personal growth using business models as a way to experience that growth.
In keeping with this philosophy, the individualized Business Administration major at Ripon is self-designed, and encourages students to identify the relationships between business and other disciplines.. That means you can incorporate any other interest area with the program, and receive credits for those special interest courses. For example, a student interested in the arts might take fine arts or communications courses in order to prepare for management of a museum or arts program. A student interested in sports might include courses in Sports Psychology or Coaching to complete a "Sports Management" emphasis. The self-design is created sometime between the end of the Sophomore year and the middle of the Junior year. For detailed information on the self-design, click here.
All students also take core courses that are important to a complete understanding of business. They include courses in economics, accounting, finance, statistics and management. Business electives in marketing, management, and human resources are also available. The Ripon College Catalog contains detailed information and course descriptions.
Alternatively, students may choose the General Business Administration track, which is more prescriptive relative to required courses, and is useful for students enrolling in certain MBA programs. For more information on the two tracks, go to Course Requirements.
Both tracks are excellent choices for the business leaders of tomorrow. Ripon College turns out great beginning managers, because the liberal arts helps students to make connections between business and other disciplines. Ripon students also develop great critical thinking, decision making and communication skills, which can then be used to learn the specifics of their chosen business career. Ripon College students also function very well in graduate school, since they have learned the skills necessary to become lifelong learners.
Ripon College is also a great place to learn to "make a difference" while "making a living." We have started to emphasize "Social Entrepreneurship" which is one of three Business Management minors available at the college. Social Entrepreneuship emphasizes corporate social responsibility, nonprofit management, and using business models to improve communities. For more information, click on "Social Entrepreneurship."
