Off-Campus Study
Ripon College supports a number of programs of interest to students
of the environment. Additional programs are supported by the Associated
Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) of which Ripon College is a member.
- Tropical Field Studies
in Costa Rica is an ACM Program that has attracted Ripon students
over the past few years. Students conduct field studies in Costa
Rica during the spring semester. One recent Ripon graduate studied
scarlet macaws and has continued her work with these colorful birds
after her graduation.
- Students on the Tanzania
Program divide their time between the University of Dar as Salaam
and important anthropological and ecological sites in northern Tanzania.
From tent camps, students study in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro areas.
Although a relatively new program, Ripon sent one student in 1999
who worked on a research project in the Serengeti.
- For 30 years the ACM
Wilderness Field Station Program has educated environmentalists
by providing first-hand experience in one of the United States' foremost
wilderness areas, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).
The students in this program share their time between the Wilderness
Biological Station and study sites in the BWCAW and Quetico Provincial
Park in Ontario, Canada.
- The
Washington Semester Program, administered by American University,
can be opted by students interested in environmental policy and environmental
law. Seminars, internships and research are available.
- Other programs
include: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, The University of Swansea
(Wales) and Zimbabwe program.
