Our Philosophy: Excellence

From current students to faculty and alumni, the people associated with the Ripon College Department of Communication share a commitment to excellence. We believe in setting high standards and in providing the education, motivation, support and development opportunities to enable each of our students not just to achieve, but to surpass those standards.

Everyone in the department is committed to working together to ensure that each individual and the department as a whole succeed at a level of excellence. Thus, alumni work closely with current students on job-search planning. Both faculty and seniors mentor newly declared majors to speed their development in the skills they will need in the classroom and in the world of work.

Students of all class levels organize study groups for particular classes and serve as sounding boards for each other on projects. In the Ripon College Department of Communication, excellence is not just our goal -- it is our philosophy of learning for a fulfilling and successful life.

Excellence In Action

  • Since 2000, Ripon College Communication majors have swept the awards ceremony of the Wisconsin Communication Association, winning more than 75 percent of all research paper awards in the state as well as overall undergraduate student honors.
  • Each year since 2000, Ripon College Communication majors have had one or more representatives at the highly selective (only 30 papers in total are selected each year) DePauw Undergraduate Honors Conference for Communication.

We’ll Help You Make Our Major Your Own

As a communication major, you will complete a series of required courses we call "the majors' core." These classes ensure that you develop a solid understanding of the key theories of human communication and that you are able to apply those theories in your own research, writing and speaking. But completion of the majors' core is only half of the department experience. From the day you declare your major, you will work closely with your academic adviser and your alumni mentors to plan a slate of elective courses, an internship strategy and even involvement in campus activities that will help you explore your particular interest area in the field of communication. Among the areas you may choose as your focus are:

  • political communication
  • public relations/marketing
  • organizational communication/consulting
  • research/pre-graduate study
  • journalism
  • public advocacy
