Locating Job Openings

State-wide Bulletins
Wisconsin and many other states put out a bulletin (usually weekly) which lists openings for the entire state or region. Many schools choose to advertise in these bulletins because it is an easy way to reach a lot of people. You can access the Wisconsin State Bulletin at www.dpi.state.wi.us.

Job Fairs
Many states have teacher recruitment fairs where districts from around the area come to interview candidates. These are very similar to most job fairs which may require time spent standing in line for a five- to 15-minute interview, but can be a very useful time to make initial contacts. For a complete listing of Teacher Fairs around the country see the AAEE National Directory of Job and Career Fairs for Educators.

Loose Listings
The Office of Career Development receives listings from various school districts both in-state and out-of-state. We keep all listings in a binder for education majors. Stop in and check it out!

Newspaper Want-Ads
Some school districts will advertise in major metropolitan newspapers (i.e. Milwaukee Journal, Chicago Tribune, Des Moines Register). This form of listing may be particularly helpful if you are conducting a job search out-of-state. You may want to consider getting a Sunday subscription to the paper nearest your desired location.

Unadvertised Listings
If you are searching in a particular area, you may not want to wait for advertised listings. Go ahead and send your resume and cover letter, expressing an interest in positions and ask the district to keep you informed of any openings that may occur.

Networking
Don't forget to let everyone know that you are looking for a job. One of the most effective forms of advertising is word-of-mouth.
