Anthropology in a Changing World

With the end of the Cold War and the dawn of the "post-modern" world, many of the old certainties regarding the means and ends of Western Civilization have been cast in doubt. In this uncertain age, Anthropology plays an important role in helping to delineate the ways in which we will enter a new century and millennium. Anthropology is not simply about "other" exotic societies; fundamentally, it is the study of human societies and cultures in general. Anthropology seeks to find the essence of what it is to be human. It does this by examining topics as diverse as our similarities and differences with other primates, our buried, archaeological past, our current ways of doing things and the human predilection to use symbols in talking, writing and the arts. Anthropology delights in the ways in which humans have solved common problems through different solutions while they also have created unique ways of conceptualizing and interacting with the world around them.
