Fall 2010 -- Requests taken 08/25/2010-12/3/2010.

Please note that ILL books have a much shorter due date than regular Lane Library books. Please use ILL items immediately. Renewals are not guaranteed and all books are due by the date on the bookstrap.

All interlibrary loan requests are subject to United States copyright law. Lane Library is CONTU compliant.

What is ILL?

Interlibrary loan is a courtesy service provided by Lane Library. It is to be used as a last resort and not intended as your primary method of research. After all other library resources have been exhausted an interlibrary loan request may be made. Please be certain to check our library catalog and electronic resources before making your request.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge to you for interlibrary loan service. However, some lending libraries charge an additional fee. If a lending fee will be applied we will contact you before completing the request and you will have the option of paying it.

What if my ILL book is overdue?

Any interlibrary loan items overdue in excess of three days will be fined $1 per day per item. Any item overdue by thirty days will be billed a $75 replacement fee, as well as any additional charges levied by the lending library. Fines will be charged to your student account.

Please return your interlibrary loan books on time. Your ILL book belongs to another library and you are not able to use it indefinitely. Please take notes or photocopy important pages to which you may later refer in the research process.

How many items can I request?

You may have a total of 5 “active” book requests at one time. This limit will be enforced to curb frequently overdue interlibrary loan items and aid you in your research--we do not want you so overwhelmed that you are unable to use the books you request (it is difficult enough to read 5 additional books in 2-3 weeks with a full courseload). Active book requests are those at any stage of the interlibrary loan process—requested, in process, checked out, in transit, etc. Article requests are not counted in your active book requests.

Due to time constraints we can only make 5 requests per day per person. If you make more than 5 requests in one day we will honor 5, and the remaining requests will be made in the following day(s).

You are allowed a maximum of 30 requests per semester before you will be asked to meet with a librarian. Please do not hesitate to contact a librarian at any time in your research.

Can I get anything through ILL?

Material owned by Lane Library cannot be requested through interlibrary loan. We do not honor requests for textbooks. Dissertations are very difficult to obtain. Archival material is impossible to obtain. We cannot make international requests.

How will you notify me?

The library will send you a system-generated email when your item arrives. Books may be picked up at the circulation desk. Electronic articles and paper photocopies will be forwarded to your email and campus mailbox, respectively.

How long will it take?

It generally takes 7-10 days. Some times it is shorter, some times it is longer. Please plan ahead.

How long is the loan period?

All due dates are determined by the lending library. Most libraries allow for three weeks, including delivery time, but some may allow for as little as one week. Please use interlibrary loan material immediately. Interlibrary loan items may be recalled without notice at any time.

Can I renew my book?

Renewals are also at the discretion of the lending library. Lenders may offer a renewal of 1-3 weeks or no renewal at all. Renewals must be requested on or before the due date. Only one renewal may be requested for each item. Once an interlibrary loan item is overdue it cannot be renewed. Renewal is not guaranteed, please plan accordingly.

Interlibrary loan items which you fail to pick up will not be renewed.

What are my responsibilities?

You are responsible for returning the material on time and in the same condition in which you received it. If an interlibrary loan item is overdue your privileges will be suspended until the overdue item is returned.

If an interlibrary loan item is lost or damaged you are responsible for all fines and fees levied by the lending library. Any charges will be billed to your student account.

How do I make a request?

Books: Please request through FirstSearch.

Articles: Please use our request form.

Renewals: Please use our renewal form.

What is up with the winter break thing?

Ripon College is closed for one month. Lane Library cannot guarantee a two-month due date for interlibrary loan items and, therefore, is unable to provide service to students over the break.

Can I get ILL over summer break?

Lane Library provides interlibrary loan service to those students working and researching on campus in the summer months.

I am a faculty or staff person. What about me?

Please contact Elizabeth Hunt with any questions you may have regarding the interlibrary loan service.
