Spring 2007 Red Hawks of the Week

Jenni Marcell

Mosinee, Wis./D.C. Everest

Marcell placed in four different events in this weekend's MWC Track and Field Championships. She set a new school and conference record in the hammer throw with a distance of 141-08. Marcell also provisionally qualified for Nationals in the Shot Put with a distance of 42-04. She earned another third place finish in the Discus, while placing fourth in the Javelin.

Jordan Baitinger
Senior
Fremont, Wis./Weyauwega-Fremont

Baitinger continued his strong pitching performance over the weekend, earning the second of Ripon's three wins, en route to a Midwest Conference Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Regionals for the fourth consecutive season. Against
St. Norbert on Friday, Baitinger pitched a complete game nine-hitter in Ripon's 7-3 victory over the Green Knights. He allowed three earned runs in the game, while striking out one and walking none.

Cassy recorded season and career bests in both the 100 hurdles and 200 meters in Saturday's UW-Madison Invitational. She also set her career best in the pole vault, with a distance of 10'0". Cassy was also a part of the 4x100 and 4x400 teams, which both ran season bests.

Brian Felix

Marengo, Ill.

At Saturday's UW-Madison Invitational, Brian ran season bests in the 200 meter dash and 400 meter hurdles, with times of 23.46 and 1:01.84, respectively. Brian was also a part of the 4x100 and 4x400 teams, which each recorded season best times.

Mueller went 4-1 on the mound last week, with three complete games, helping Ripon clinch a spot in the Midwest Conference Tournament. Mueller allowed eight earned runs in 25.1 innings, walking five and striking out seven. In Sunday’s game one win against Beloit College, Mueller set the school record for strikeouts in a career, striking out the 221st batter of her career. Mueller also scored four runs and drove in four more at the plate in Ripon's six games.

Bryant Bednarek

Berlin, Wis./Berlin

Bednarek made four relief appearances in Ripon’s four games last week, helping them clinch a spot in the Midwest Conference Tournament. Bednarek allowed eight hits in 6.1 innings of action, while allowing just two earned runs. Bednarek picked up the win in Ripon’s game two win against Lawrence on Sunday. He also was credited with two saves in Ripon's other two wins.

At the Illinois Benedictine Invite, Brittany ran career bests in the 1500 (Second fastest in school history) and the 800.  She placed 3rd in the 800 and 4th in the 1500.  She also ran a leg on the 4x400 relay that placed 6th.

Ben Metzler

Green Bay, Wis./Preble

Metzler won all six of the matches he played this week (3 singles and three doubles), helping Ripon finish the season with an undefeated conference record for the third consecutive year. In Friday’s victory over Lawrence, Metzler won number three singles 6-2, 6-2. He then teamed up with Andy Schaller to win number two doubles 8-4. The next day against Beloit, Metzler won by forfeit in singles play, before winning number two doubles, along with Schaller, 8-2. Sunday against St. Norbert, Metzler won 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6) in number three singles, and finished the week by winning number two doubles with Schaller 8-7 (7-2).

Erin placed fourth in the 10K at the UW-Eau Claire Track & Field Invitational on Saturday. Erin's time of 42:18.21 ranks 13th on Ripon's All-Time 10K list and was a season best of any Red Hawk in the event this season.

Chad Olson

Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer

Olson was the sparkplug at the top of the order for the Red Hawks, who went 8-0 on the week with four-game sweeps over Carroll and Beloit. Olson batted .484 (15-31) in the eight games, with one double and six RBI. Olson did most of his work on the basepaths, stealing seven bases on eight attempts, while also scoring 11 runs. Olson scored at least one run in seven of the Red Hawk’s eight games this week.

Czarnecki helped the Red Hawks split a pair of matches over the weekend. Ripon defeated Cornell College on Saturday, with Czarnecki picking up victories in singles and doubles play. In number two doubles, Cazrnecki defeated Cornell's Seth Henson 6-0, 6-1. He then teamed up with George Higgins to win their number one doubles contest. The Ripon duo defeated Henson and Jay Welvaert 8-2.

Marcell placed in the top three in three different events in this weekend's Sherman-Lukoski Invite. She won the Hammer Throw with a distance of 130'11", which tied her own school record. Marcell then went on to place second in the shot put (40'06".25) and javelin (87'00"), while finishing third in the disc (115'08").

Cas Moelling

Moelling kicked off his outdoor season with a bang, winning the pole vault at the Sherman-Lukoski Invite. He also set a new school record in the process, with a distance of 13'7". That breaks the previous school record of 13'6", which was shared by Dan McNaughton (1983) and Phil Robinson (1986).

Higgins won both his singles and doubles matches in convincing style against Carroll College, as he helped the Red Hawks defeat the Pioneers 8-1 in their conference opener. In number one singles play, Higgins defeated John Krewer 6-0, 6-2. He then went on to team up with Dave Czarnecki in number one doubles play to defeat Krewer and Andy Prentice 8-2.

Shafer started all nine games for the Red Hawks during their Spring trip to Orlando, Fla. last week. Shafter batted .348 (8-23) during the week with one double and one RBI. The Oakfield, Wis. native scored five runs, while also stealing two bases.

Chevy Schultz

Wausau, Wis./Wausau East

Schultz led the Red Hawks in hitting during their nine-game Spring trip to Tampa, Fla. last week. Schultz, who started all nine games, batted a team-high .448 (13-29), while also recording team-highs in doubles (6), triples (1), and RBI (10). The Wausau, Wis. native finished the week with a slugging percentage of .724, while also leading the team with a .515 on-base percentage.
