Spring 2007 MWC Performers of the Week

Dwyer picked up two wins in his only two starts last week. In a 10-2 win at Carroll, he threw eight innings of five-hit ball, allowing one earned run, while striking out 10 batters. The freshman lefty pitched a complete game six-hitter against Beloit over the weekend, posting 10 strike outs once again as he allowed one earned run in a 4-3 Red Hawk victory. The wins helped Ripon establish a record for consecutive conference victories with 25, topping the previous mark of 19.

Bednarek made four relief appearances last week, earning a victory and a pair of saves as the Red Hawks locked up a spot in the 2007 MWC Championship Tournament. The senior righty allowed eight hits and two earned runs in 6.1 innings of action. Bednarek picked up the win in game two against Lawrence on Sunday after throwing two innings of two-hit ball to earn the save in the first contest that day. He earned his first save of the season a day earlier with a perfect ninth inning against the Vikings.

Men's Tennis  

Andy Schaller

Neenah, Wis./Neenah

Schaller won both his singles and doubles matches on Saturday to help the Red Hawks pick up their first team victory of the season in a 6-3 decision over Elmhurst. Schaller swept his No. 5 singles match against Robert Korsch, defeating him 6-0, 6-0. Schaller then went on to team with Ben Metzler in number No. 2 doubles, defeating Jake McNamara/Dave Douglass 8-5.

Green Bay, Wis./Preble

Metzler won all six of the matches he played last week, helping Ripon finish the season with an undefeated conference record for the third consecutive season. In Friday’s victory over Lawrence, Metzler won at No. 2 singles by defeating Travis Fondow 6-2, 6-2. He then teamed up with junior Andy Schaller to win their No. 2 doubles match 8-4. The senior also earned a No. 3 singles win over St. Norbert, a forfeit singles win against Beloit and two more victories with Scaller against the Green Knights and Bucs in the second doubles slot.

WOMEN'S FIELD

Jenni Marcell

Mosinee, Wis./D.C. Everest

Marcell placed in the top three in three different events in last weekend’s Sherman-Lukoski Invite at Ripon. She won the hammer throw with a distance of 130’11.0”, which tied her own school record. The junior then went on to place second in the shot put (40’06”.25) and third in the discus (115’08.00”). Marcell’s hammer throw mark is tops in the MWC this year.

MEN'S FIELD

At Saturday’s Wisconsin Private College Championships hosted by Carthage, Camara won the triple jump with a school record leap of 45’03.50”.  The sophomore’s mark broke a 17-year old school record in the event and ranks second in the conference this season.

WOMEN'S FIELD

Jenni Marcell

Junior

Marcell won two events and placed in fourth in two others at Saturday’s Wisconsin Private College Championships. The junior thrower won the hammer throw with a school-record toss of 135’11.00” and also took home gold in the discus. She went on to place fourth in the javelin and shot put, posting career-best efforts in the javelin and discus. In the MWC this season, Marcell ranks second in the hammer, second in the javelin, third in the discus, and fourth in the shot put.

Jen Mueller

Little Suamico, Wis./Oconto Falls

Mueller posted a 4-1 record on the mound last week, throwing a trio of complete games to help Ripon clinch a berth in the 2007 MWC Championship Tournament. Mueller allowed eight earned runs in 25.1 innings, walking five and striking out seven. The senior righty’s week included a two-hit shutout of Beloit and a three-hit effort in a 2-1 win over Lawrence. In game one against Beloit on Sunday, Mueller became the school’s career strikeout leader after striking out the 221st batter of her career. The 11-game winner enters the MWC tourney ranked second in the conference in ERA (1.99) and opponents batting average (.245).
