TAMPA, Fla. – Ripon won their eighth game in a row Friday afternoon, as they completed their second sweep in as many days, this time taking a pair of games from Catzenovia College (NY). The Red Hawks won the first game 3-1, before winning the second 9-5.
The Red Hawks started game one on a good note, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Alex Duros drove in the first run, thanks to an error by Catzenovia. The second run was also scored on a miscue in the field, which allowed Duros to cross the plate. Catzenovia cut that lead in half in the second half, scoring on an RBI single.
Ripon got that run back later in the game, scoring once in the top of the third. They produced that run on the bases. After Nate Paul reached base on a fielder's choice, he promptly stole second and reached third on a sacrifice fly. Paul would then cross the plate on a wild pitch.
The Red Hawks only recorded four hits in the game, two coming from Matt Dwyer. Duros and Will Gillis recorded the only RBI for Ripon. Jason Wiershchke received tech win, pitching a complete game five hitter, while striking out four.
The second game had more offense in the first inning than the first contest had all game. Cazenovia looked like they may run away with the game, scoring four runs in the top of the first. That was quickly matched by Ripon, who saw four runners cross the plate in the bottom of the inning. Nick Beaman drove in the first run with a double, while Aaron Kastner delivered a 2 RBI single, one batter later. John Henrickson drove in the fourth run of the inning on a ground out, which scored Kastner from third.
Cazenovia took that lead back in the third inning, scoring on an RBI double, but that was matched once again by the Red Hawks, who plated one run in the fourth on an RBI double by Kurt Roeder, which tied the game at five.
Ripon took the lead for good in the following inning, scoring four runs to put the game out of reach. After the first two batters recorded outs, Ripon loaded the bases for Roeder, who came through once again, this time clearing the bases with another double. He would score one batter later on a single by Paul Ebben.
Roeder, Ebben, Henrickson, and Mac Shumann all recorded two hits apiece. Roeder also finished with four RBI and two runs scored. Ripon produced four doubles in the game. Bryant Bullock picked up the win, striking out three batters in five innings of action.
The Red Hawks will finish their trip to Florida on Saturday, when they'll face Augustana College (IL). That game will begin at 10:00 a.m. EDT and will be played at Northwest Park.
