RIPON, Wis. – The Red Hawks completed the season sweep of Lawrence University Saturday in impressive fashion, winning the first game 19-1, while continuing the onslaught in game two with a 17-8 victory. In addition to their 36 runs in the two games, Ripon batters also combined to pound out 41 hits, 14 of which went for extra-bases. Their 27 hits in the second game ranks second in school history, just two hits shy of the record.
The Red Hawk bats wasted no time heating up, scoring four runs on three hits in the opening inning and adding another run in the second on a home run by Bryant Bullock. Lawrence (3-9, 0-4) scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the lead to four.
Ripon (12-3, 4-0) added two more runs in the fifth, thanks to a Mac Shumann home run. Shumann would add his second long-ball of the day in the seventh, a three-run shot to right center, giving Ripon a 10-1 lead. The Red Hawks would put an exclamation point on the game the following inning, putting up nine runs in the top of the eighth. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Nick Beaman.
Shumann led the Red Hawks with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in five runs, while scoring four more. Bullock also recorded four hits, to go along with three RBI and three runs scored. Beaman was the only other Red Hawk with multiple hits, with a pair of base knocks. Freshman Jason Wierschke (2-0) picked up the win, scattering eight hits in eight innings, allowing zero earned runs, while striking out four.
The second game of the day started out a little slower, with Ripon scoring once in each of the first two innings, including a solo home run by Matt Dwyer for the first run of the game. Lawrence tied the game in the bottom of the second on a pair of RBI singles, but that's as close as they would get.
Brandan Birschbach gave Ripon the lead for good with a two-RBI single in the fourth inning. They would add two more runs that inning, as well as three more the following inning, which was led off by a home run by Nick Beaman, which marked his fourth homer in as many games. After another run in the sixth, the Red Hawks combined to score seven times in the seventh and eighth inning to complete the sweep with a 17-8 victory.
Beaman and Birschbach were both nearly perfect at the plate in the second game, as they each went 5-for-6, with three RBI apiece. Dwyer, Duros, and Paul Ebben each finished with three hits, while Bullock, Shumann, and Aaron Kastner all finished with two. Adam Linsmeyer (2-0) got the win, giving up three earned runs and striking out five batters in his five innings of action.
The Red Hawks will hope to continue their great play on Tuesday, when they'll travel to Marian College for a non-conference double-header. The first game will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Fond du Lac.
