TAMPA, Fla. - The Red Hawks continued their early season struggles Tuesday, losing a heartbreaker 5-4 to Vassar College (NY). Ripon allowed three runs in the final two innings after getting out to a 4-2 lead. That loss drops the Red Hawks to 1-4 halfway through their spring trip.
Ripon started the game on a positive note, scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning. Chad Olson started the rally with a walk. Olson would score one batter later, as Chevy Scultz continued his strong start to the season with an RBI double. He would then score on a Kyle McFarland sacrafice fly. Bo Johnson capped off the inning with an RBI single, scoring John Dunlavy.
Vassar managed to score one run in the bottom of the first, before tacking on another in the second frame. Ripon would then get a little bit of breathing room, as they scored once in the third. Matt Dwyer drove in Mac Shumann to take a two run lead, which they would hold until the bottom of the eighth.
Vassar didn't look like much of a threat to begin the eighth, as the first two batters of the inning went down swinging. That was followed by three consecutive singles, a walk, an error, which scored one run, and another walk, before Ripon was able to get out of the inning. Vassar carried that momentum into the bottom of the ninth. The leadoff batter reached when he was hit by the pitch. After advancing to second on a sacrafice, the runner came around to score on a two-out single to centerfield, giving Vassar the walk-off victory.
The Red Hawks continue their string of games in Florida Wednesday afternoon, as they'll square off against Rhode Island College in a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. EST at Miller Huggins Field in
St. Petersburg, Fla.
