TAMPA, Fla. - After opening the season with two losses, the Red Hawks finally broke into the win column Monday afternoon. Ripon won game one of their doubleheader 3-2 against Gettysburg College (PA). They weren't as fortunate in the second game however, losing 10-0 to the Bullets.
Gettysburg struck first in game one, with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ripon's Mike Lloyd struck out the first two batters he faced, but then gave up a double to left centerfield. That was promptly followed by a home run, giving Gettysburg a 2-0 advantage.
Ripon remained scoreless until the top of the sixth, when they matched Gettysburg's first inning with two runs of their own. The Red Hawk rally was started by Brett Wegner, who reached second on an error to lead off the sixth. Chad Olson then singled to left centerfield. Wegner and Olson both scored on John Dunlavy's single to center, tying the game at two.
The Red Hawks held Gettysburg scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, giving them a chance to win in the seventh. They didn't waste that opportunity. Olson would start things off, reaching on a fielder's choice. He would score two batters later on another Dunlavy single, giving Ripon the go-ahead run.
Dunlavy finished with all three RBI. He and Olson were the only Red Hawks with two hits. Olson also scored twice. Lloyd got the win for the Red Hawks, scattering nine hits over seven innings, while allowing two earned runs and striking out six.
Ripon fell behind early again in the second game, but they would not make a comeback a second time. Gettysburg scored at least one run in each of the first four innings, en route to an 8-0 lead. The Bullets finished the game with 14 hits, 10 of which came in the first four innings. Ripon on the other hand could muster just three hits the entire game. Gettysburg would add two more runs in the top of the seventh inning for good measure.
Ripon's three hits all came at the top of the order Olson, Schultz, and Dunlavy all recorded one base hit apiece as they batted 1-2-3, respectively, in the batting order. Scultz was the only one with an extra-base hit, a double. Gettysburg had four players with multiple base knocks, while also recording three doubles.
The Red Hawks will be in action once again on Tuesday afternoon, as they'll take on Vassar College (NY). Game one of the doubleheader will begin at 12:00 p.m. EST at Pasco Community College in Tampa, Fla.
