Progressive Changes in the Training of Exercise Science
Majors
For years, PE majors were prepared for teaching careers by taking a
large variety of skill-oriented activity classes emphasizing technique,
mechanics and “how to teach.” With the expansion of opportunities
beyond teaching, the preparation of an Exercise Science major has, likewise,
changed.
The wellness revolution, fitness movement and business opportunities
have necessitated a more science- and business-oriented approach. Students
now take science-, recreation-. sports- and business-oriented classes
within the department, and also courses from the biology, economics,
business management and leadership studies departments. All of this
is aimed at preparing students for more specific jobs within the field
of exercise science.
No department at Ripon has undergone the metamorphosis that Ripon’s
Exercise Science Department has experienced. We listened to what students
wanted and changed to serve their interests.
