There is very little know about Caecilius. He was born before the year 222 BC. He was an Insubrian Gaul, and a slave. He was eventually freed. He wrote comedies, and he drem heavily from Menander. We have the titles to 42 of his plays, and fragments amounting to 280 lines. He left his titles as they were in Greek, he did not change them to Latin, even though his plays were written in Latin. He was not popular with the public when he started but they came to like him during his lifetime. He also helped Terence to publish his first play, for Terence's work had so impressed him. Caeculius died in 168 BC.
