Philadelphia has become known for its Annual New Year’s Day
Mummer’s Parade. The parade consists
of thousands of people marching down Broad Street in clubs that fall into the categories of
Comics, Fancies, String Bands, and Fancy Brigades. |

|
The first Mummer’s Parade held in Philadelphia was on January
1, 1901. The parade at that time only
consisted of the fancies and the comics though. The parade is thought to have originated from European traditions that
were brought over by immigrants. |

Wherever the tradition of Mumming may have come from people
love and enjoy partaking in the festivities every New Year’s Day. The parade lasts all day and the parties
last far into the night after all the television crews have gone home, the
costumes have come off, and although the marchers should be resting they
party, and party, and think of what costume they will wear the next year…all
the meanwhile… partying. |
